The Chestnut-breasted White-face is a much sought-after SA endemic.
The Chestnut-breasted Whiteface is a little-known resident of the Australian interior. Most colourful and rarest of the Whiteface family, they are found on harsh, saltbush-studded gibber plains, and have long been one of Australia’s most sought-after birds. While officially listed as ‘Near-Threatened’, the difficulty of studying such a minute bird in a vast, harsh landscape makes accurate monitoring difficult. In recent years they have begun to disappear from the ‘old faithful’ sites.
Grasswrens evoke a sense of the Australian outback. Their plumage embodies the colours of the rocks and soil of the land they inhabit. Cryptic in their habits, Grasswrens frequent some of the most isolated parts of the country. Grasswrens don't give up their secrets easily, but when seen well they reveal a subtle yet striking beauty. There are 13 species of Grasswren in Australia, our pin, while modelled on a Short-tailed Grasswren, depicts a generic Grasswren to be representative of all of them.
